“Why Didn’t I Think Of That?” – The 4th Annual Holiday Edition

christmas hacks

Here on my blog, I strive to share simple, everyday tips and tricks that can help make your life a little bit easier. But sometimes, the tips that I want to share arenโ€™t something I can write a whole blog post about!

Since I simply cannot waste a good idea, I tuck them away to use at a later date. Today Iโ€™ll be sharing some of those tips and tricks with you in the 4th annual Holiday Edition of my ongoing series โ€œWhy Didnโ€™t I Think Of That?โ€

Revisit any of the previous editions of the โ€œWhy Didnโ€™t I Think Of That?โ€ series by checking out the link at the end of this post! :-)

1. Sticky Note Christmas Tree

Bring some Christmas cheer into your workspace or home office with a sticky note tree! Grab a stack of green sticky notes, along with a couple other colors to use as โ€œornaments,โ€ and find an open stretch of wall to construct your tree.

Not only is it a fun activity, but itโ€™s also a great way to decorate for the holidays using supplies that are readily available! (As an added bonus, itโ€™ll be easy to take down once the holidays are over.)

2. Double Duty Gifting

Most gifts are packaged in boxes or bags that end up getting thrown away. So why not have your gift do double duty by making the packaging part of the gift too?

Pack your gift into a reusable storage container instead. The recipient will appreciate the gesture and be able to put the container to good use!

3. Quick & Easy Garland

Whether you drape them over your tree or around a room, garlands make a festive decoration during the holidays! And you can make your own garland quickly and easily with just some cupcake liners, string, and a stapler.

Gather up cupcake liners in various colors, styles, and sizes, then fold the liners in half to form a semi-circle. Layer the liners onto a long length of string until you find an arrangement you like, then staple them in place and hang your finished garland!

4. Tangle-Free Light Storage

Itโ€™s hard to be excited about decorating for the holidays when you know your Christmas lights are a big, tangled mess. So do yourself a favor and set aside a few closet hangers to use when itโ€™s time to pack away the decorations in a few weeks.

Before you put the lights back in the box, wrap each strand around one of the hangers. It only takes a few extra seconds to do, and it will save you loads of time when itโ€™s time to decorate next year!

5. DIY Rustic Ornaments

Make your own wooden ornaments to bring a bit of rustic charm into your holiday decor! All you need to make them are a handful of popsicle sticks or craft sticks and your trusty hot glue gun. :-)

Glue the sticks together to make stars, circles, geometric designs, or whatever else you can dream up. Then just use a bit of string or twine to tie hang your rustic ornaments on your tree (or anywhere, really!)

6. Easy Christmas Chandelier

Want an easy way to bring some festive cheer into your dining area? All it takes is a few extra tree ornaments to turn your dining room light fixture into a Christmas โ€œchandelier!โ€

Use string, twine, or even fishing line to hang ornaments from the light fixture. Hang them at varying heights to achieve nice chandelier effect (but keep them high enough that they wonโ€™t get in the way during dinner.)

7. Professional Gift Wrapping

Give your gifts a professional look this year by securing the wrapping paper with double-sided tape instead of standard scotch tape. This simple trick can make any gift look like it belongs on the cover of a holiday catalog!

8. Wrapping Paper Storage

Keep your wrapping paper organized and easy-to-find this year with the help of a hanging garment bag. Just slide the tubes into the bag, hang the bag in your closet, and theyโ€™ll stay neat and organized until you need them again!

9. Track Your Holiday Shopping

When it comes to shopping for holiday gifts, keeping everything organized can feel like a full-time job! But the Santaโ€™s Bag app for iOS makes keeping track of your Christmas shopping so much easier.

You can use it to keep track of all sorts of useful information: gift ideas, budgets, gift wrap status, and even location (which is very handy for people like me who have been known to forget where we hid a gift!)

If youโ€™re an Android user, the Christmas Gift List app in the Google Play store offers a lot of similar features!

  1. My mouth is watering just looking at your Prime Rib Roast! I tried your recipe last year and it was wonderful! So now it will be a new tradition here! Thank you!

    • I’m so glad you enjoy the prime rib as much as my family does. :-)

  2. With #4 if after you wrap up the lites you put each hanger into a grocery bag and set them all together the grocery bag will help cushion them, we do this but wrap the lites around cardboard tubes

  3. Downloading Santa’s Bag right now. It’s hard to keep lists hidden from the kids. And, yes, I am one of those moms who forgets where she has hidden gifts and forgets what has been purchased. Christmas 2019 — gift giving will be organised!

    • I forget where Iโ€™ve hidden things too and thought I was the only one.

  4. I cut apart a cardboard box into squares to wrap my lights around. They store flat in a tote and are easy to organize. I also have a long shallow tote that my wrapping paper fits in and it fits under a bed out of sight.

  5. I use the pretty covered boxes that you can find at Michaels (usually on sale or with a coupon) for much of my gift giving container and it doesn’t need to be wrapped. They come in different sizes for a variety of items. I also use a white kitchen trash bag to hold rolls of wrapping paper and hang it in a closet on a hangar. I am gearing toward using left over fabric, brown paper, comics for wrapping and a unique bow or fun item for the ribbon.

  6. We usually store our lights around leftover wrapping paper tubes or we have long plastic storage bin.

    • On the lists . My mom actually keeps a
list of what sheโ€™s given the kids and grandkids in previous years . She has a little file.

  7. I really love the suggestion to use a garment bag for my rolls of wrapping paper!

  8. The sticky note tree would be great as a โ€œgratitude treeโ€. You could start out with a green tree and each day add an โ€œornamentโ€ stating something you appreciate about someone else or something youโ€™re grateful for. Thanks for the ideas Jillee! Happy Holidays!

    • I was trying to think of another use for the tree, and yours is a great idea!

  9. The sticky-note Christmas tree seems wasteful, imo…maybe unless little notes, quotes, Bible verses etc. were written on them – kind of a tree/advent calendar hybrid(?) Then again, a lot of what we do at Christmas is wasteful…single-use wrapping paper, ribbons, etc. Once my supply of wrapping paper is used up, I would like to try using brown paper from grocery bags (or craft paper), decorated and/or tied with real fabric ribbons, or using actual fabric scraps as the giftwrap. I do like the idea of the container being part of the gift – and hanging the little shiny balls from the chandeliers! Definitely something to try at our next house. With the decorations we’ve collected (or been given) over the years, the generic balls are what get left off the tree; and the only other use I can think of is filling apothecary jars or glass bowls.

    • Terry, you could always use the sticky notes after the holidays. No need to throw them away after Christmas. :-)

      • I suppose this is true…I guess I’d forgotten that they re-stick (provided the wall is clean)!
